The Brandon School District will consider the sale of 23 acres of school property just north of Leece Road along Oakwood Road. The decision to consider the parcel sale was discussed on Jan.26 during a special board meeting.
‘Right now it’s just in the planning stage,? said Beth Nuccio, school board president. ‘We don’t have a timeline for the sale of the property’it’s just under study. However, we really don’t have any plans for the property in the future.?
The parcel, once a section of the Tucker Farm, was purchased in December 2007 and was eyed for the new elementary school following the passing of the $73 million district bond extension earlier that year. The property sparked controversy among residents after concern over sharp curves in Oakwood Road, multiple residential driveways and a gravel road entrance were discussed.
Prior to the purchase, a study by Hubbell, Roth & Clark, consulting engineers from Bloomfield Hills, reviewed the road and traffic situation around the property. The study concluded that the proposed school driveway would be safe for entrance to the proposed facility.
On Dec. 11, 2006, the board voted 7-0 to purchase the property for about $400,000.
However, school officials changed direction in May 2007 with the purchase of a 75-acre parcel north of Oakwood Road, just east of Hadley Road, for the construction of a new elementary school. At a cost of $850,000, the purchase also included a two-and-one-half acre parcel along Oakwood Road for access to the school.
Oakwood Elementary School is set to open in September.
