Groveland Twp.-The south will rise again’at least for the weekend.
Holly Civil War Days are back for the tenth year at Holly Recreation Area, 8100 Grange Hall Road.
On April 13 and 14 the dedicated re-enactors of Fifth Texas Company E will set up camp in the park, living as though it was 1862.
‘Basically the camps are a civilian camp and two military camps,? said park supervisor Shawn Speaker.
‘Everybody will be in authentic clothing,? said Speaker. ‘The equipment and everything is all authentic’nothing modern is allowed to be visible to the public.?
The event is sponsored by the ‘Friends of Holly? and is free to the public, although a park permit must be purchased for admission onto the grounds.
‘People are open to walk through the civilian camps and the military camps to see how its all set up,? said Speaker.
Activities include demonstrations throughout the day, a bazaar table, military drills, mock civilian court and a traditional church service at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
‘It all culminates in a battle on the battlefield,? said Speaker.
The war re-enactment is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.
Battles last about an hour and feature actors with authentic artillery, including civil-war era cannons.
‘During the battle they have a historian there who’s basically explaining the battle,? said Speaker.
There’s been a large turnout for the event in the past, and Speaker estimates it will continue to grow.
‘We’re expecting a considerable turnout.?
