For children at the Grace Centers of Hope in Pontiac, this Christmas season will be a little warmer thanks to the HeadStart program at Daniel Axford Elementary.
Eleven parent volunteers from HeadStart spent last Tuesday night sewing 14 warm and colorful fleece blankets.
Their goal is to complete 40.
Jeanne Utley, family service coordinator for the program, thought making 40 special blankets for the children at the shelter and rehabilitation center would make a great community service project.
Each of the blankets will be made for either boys or girls, and some aren’t gender specific.
Volunteer Tina Sauer said she didn’t hesitate at the chance to help.
‘It felt good to give back,? she said. ‘I’ve been on the other end of the stick before.?
The blankets will be dropped off at Grace Centers of Hope the second week of December.
Each blanket will be folded nicely and have a ribbon wrapped around it before being given to the children.
