Bryan LaVearn will graduate and move on from Brandon High School this spring, however records of his stellar career as a Blackhawk grappler will remain.
On Jan. 16, LaVearn notched five victories at the 140-pound weight class during the Brandon Invitational on his way to a new school overall record of 174-14.
With the victories on Saturday, LaVearn moved ahead of Blackhawk grappler and 2014 graduate Trevor Bourdeau, who had 168 wins, and Aaron Hyde, a 2009 graduate with 161 wins.
LaVearn says hard work, along with regimented, intense daily practices, are his key to success.
‘Focus each practice on getting better’improvements every day,? said LaVearn, who will wrestle this fall for Tiffin University located in northwestern Ohio, where he will pursue a career in homeland security and counter terrorism.
‘It’s simple, just don’t waste time at practice,? he said. ‘Make your workouts pay off for you. It also really helps to have the support of my coaches and parents during my years as a wrestler.?
LaVearn’s first experience on the mat was when he was 6-years-old in Oxford because Brandon did not have a youth wrestling program, he said.
LaVearn is also a two-time Oakland County champion.
As a freshman at Brandon High School, LaVearn finished sixth in the state wrestling competition at 103 pounds. His sophomore year he improved to second in the state at 112 pounds. Last year, LaVearn, at 125 pounds, finished third in state competition.
‘I lost to the same two wrestlers each time at states,? he said. ‘As a senior this year, I’m going to change that.?
The Blackhawks finished second behind Lake Fenton on Saturday topping Hazel Park, Farmington Hills Harrison, Pontiac, Clawson, Waterford Mott and Orchard Lake St. Mary’s who participated in the Brandon Invitational.
