Local athletes can help young cancer patients fight their disease, at the Ride/Walk for Kids Kicking Cancer, July 18, at Waterford Hills Raceway, 4770 Waterford Road in Independence Township.
This is the non-profit group’s first fund raiser at the raceway.
“We were looking for a venue that was safe for kids, with no cars,” said Andy Roisman, chair of the event. “We found it at Waterford Hills.”
Bike ride for competitive riders is from 9-10 a.m. Family ride and walk is from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., all on the raceway’s blacktop track.
“This is a great event for both serious riders and families,” Roisman said. “We want everyone to come out and ride.”
Activities also include Kids Kicking Cancer martial arts demonstration at 10 a.m., Faces in the Air face painting, music by Electric Entertainment, Independence Township Fire Department truck, bike decorating, jewelry for sale, benefiting Kids Kicking Cancer, giveaways and crafts, and food available for purchase.
Cost is $20 donation for walkers and riders, 16 and older; $10 for those 5-16 years old; free for those under 5 years old. All proceeds benefit Kids Kicking Cancer.

Kids Kicking Cancer provides weekly classes for in- and outpatient children in the mind-body techniques of the martial arts.
“Our mission is to ease the pain of very sick children while empowering them to heal physically, spiritually and emotionally,” said Cindy Cohen, Michigan program director.
The group was founded in Michigan in 1999, and offers services free to children and families.
