Brandon’s boys golf team achieved a milestone in the program’s history.
The Blackhawks won the Flint Metro League preseason tournament for the first time in school history, earning a team score of 321, outdistancing second-place Fenton by eight strokes. Linden took third with 333.
Josh Williams led the Blackhawks with a round of 73, finishing second among all individual golfers to Lapeer West’s Ryan Reem, who finished at 72.
Ryan Bilkos was right behind Williams, finishing third among all golfers with a round of 78. Other Brandon competitors were Tom Voyer (81), Will Hubbard (89), and Brad McIntyre (95).
Brandon coach John Ubbing said the win was significant for the Blackhawks because ‘it puts us on the fast track to winning the league because of the points awarded for winning the meet.?
The Blackhawks earned 15 points in the overall league standings. A team is awarded two points for each win in Flint Metro League dual meets, and then the league holds another tournament at the conclusion of the regular season. The team with the most combined points in the league at the end of the tournament is the league champion.
At the Lapeer Invitational Aug. 19, the Blackhawks also had a solid showing, finishing third out of 25 teams at 327. Lapeer West won the invite with a score of 320, while Fenton placed second (322).
Bilkos earned medalist honors by placing in the top ten with a round of 78. Hubbard was two strokes behind at 80, followed by Brian Jordan (83), Voyer (84) and Williams (94).
Brandon also won the Durand Invitational Aug. 18, finishing with a team score of 305, outdistancing second-place Howell by six strokes.
Bilkos led the Blackhawks with a round of 73, while Jordan shot 76 and Williams and Voyer each carded 78.
