The Brandon girls tennis team built a foundation this year which coach Brian Moore hopes will lead to better things in 2004.
The Blackhawks wrapped up this season with a sixth-place finish at the regional meet Oct. 9 at Flint Carman-Ainsworth and the Flint Swim and Racket Club, scoring seven points.
Holly finished first at the regional, while Flushing took second. Both teams advanced to the state tennis finals Oct. 18-19.
Brandon’s Amanda Bohr made it to the regional semifinals at #3 singles, while Monica Lambert did likewise at #4 singles. In addition, Jessica Sanday won her first singles match of the season, advancing to the second round before being eliminated.
Two Blackhawk doubles teams ? Michelle Ashford and Nicole Schuhrke at #1 doubles, and Danie Ashford and Elizabeth Bilbey at #2 doubles ? also made it to the second round at regionals.
Brandon wrapped up the season with a third-place finish at the Flint Metro League meet Sept. 30 and a fourth-place league finish overall. The Blackhawks will be graduating six seniors ? Michelle Ashford, Schuhrke, Bilbey, Nicole Barth, Christa Nedry and Lisa Stach.
Moore said the Blackhawks showed some solid improvement this season, and hopes the returning players will build upon this year’s experience.
‘We have a lot of kids coming back next season,? Moore said. ‘I’m excited and I like our chances. I’m looking forward to it.?
