At the end of September, Pam Scott will take a three-day journey. After dealing with her own fight with breast cancer, she will participate in the Breast Cancer 3-Day walk on September 28, 29 and 30.
Scott, an Oxford resident and an employee at the T&C Federal Credit Union in Lake Orion, must raise $2,200 in order to walk in the event.
To help her out, her coworkers and her are hosting a combination bake sale, yard sale and car wash on Saturday, July 21.
The fundraiser will be from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with the car wash happening from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
‘All donations will go towards getting me there,? Scott said. ‘It is such a great cause.?
Scott’s battle with cancer started in December 2004 when she went in for her yearly mammogram. While looking at the original mammogram, doctors didn’t like what they saw, so Scott was called back for another one along with an ultrasound. The results showed that she had breast cancer.
‘By the mammogram and going into further detail, they found the cancer two years prior to any lump forming,? Scott said, stressing the importance of getting a yearly mammogram done.
Scott had a double mastectomy and started the fight to be healthy, all along crediting the importance of a yearly mammogram in helping with detection.
‘Men and women both can get this,? she said. ‘It can happen to anybody at any age. Be aware that it can happen to you.?
By participating in the 3-Day and raising money for the cause, Scott hopes that others fighting cancer will realize that they aren’t alone and they have support in their fight.
?(Cancer) touches everybody,? Scott said. ‘We need to help each other and give back.?
She said that she is thankful for the support she received from her coworkers and those who use the bank, noting that she got over 100 cards and letters from people showing their support and that they cared.
Her family, including her husband of over 30 years, Jeff, and her daughter, Melissa, have been instrumental in her return to good health, and Melissa is even helping her train for the 3-Day.
Participating in the 3-Day has not only given Scott a way to give back, but it has also given her a great support group with her team, Breast Friends of Inside & Out Fitness.
‘We have a great group of ladies,? she said, noting that the group is still looking for more walkers.
‘It’s very supportive and very cool to have that kind of connection,? Scott added about being part of a group of people that have gone through the same fight she has.
If you are interested in donating to the 3-Day, Scott said that you can mail checks, made out to The Breast Cancer 3-Day, to T&C Federal Credit Union or you can donate online at www.the3day.org/Michigan07/pamlscott.
The fundraiser will be held on Saturday, July 21 at T&C Federal Credit Union, located at 4055 S. Lapeer Road (at the corner of Silverbell and Lapeer Roads).
