Atlas Twp. – In November, township residents may be asked to approve one mill for road maintenance or police protection.
The announcement came at the Feb. 21 township meeting.
‘The bottom line is this is the last year we’ll be able to chin the total police budget and the roads,? said Atlas Township Supervisor Paul Amman. ‘One or the other is going to have to go.?
Horton Road, originally scheduled for repair this year, will get only a partial fix, with roadwork stopping at Gale Road, Amman said.
The township also opted out of a county bridge repair program, in which it would pay $25,000 to repair the Henderson Road bridge.
The bridge is on an inspection schedule, and listed as a target for repairs due to its age, with no current restrictions, says Amman.
‘Why should we give Genesee County 25 cents to fix their roads?? he said.
The motion to deny participating in the bridge program was made by township clerk Tere Onica, seconded by treasurer Ann Marie Slagle, and approved by the board with all ayes.
The township also saved $1,000 in other board decisions.
Trustee Scott Statson moved to contribute $500 to the Genesee County Recycling Coalition instead of the requested $1,000, seconded by Onica, and approved with all ayes.
In addition, the board denied contributing $500 in annual dues to participate in the Genesee Auto theft Investigation Network (GAIN).
Stolen car information is available to the township due to its contract for police services with the Genesee County Sheriff’s Department, Amman said. Onica made the motion to discontinue contributions; trustee Barry June seconded the motion, which was approved by all ayes.
One disbursement was approved by the board; $13,749 for computer hardware, software, and 12 months of computer support for the township computer system, which has required numerous repairs.
The system requires special attendance, as it interfaces with county and state systems, said Slagle.
