Atlas Twp.-The future of a township bike path is moving forward.
Plans for bike/walking paths were spearheaded by township resident Paulette Johnson during the Oct. 21 township meeting and have now expanded with monthly meetings.
At 6:30 p.m., the first Tuesday of each month, at the Atlas Township Hall, 7386 S. Gale Road, the public is invited to attend an informational meeting regarding plans for future township paths.
‘The focus of the meeting is discussing the nature of the bike or walking path,? said Johnson, who co-chairs the committee. ‘We’ll discuss such variables such as proximity to the roadways, links to the trails in nearby townships and use of the trails. We also have provided an online survey’http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/hdf6bbz’with 10 questions for input from the community. The information will then be used for future grants when they become available.
Johnson said she distributed petitions to eight village businesses last June seeking feedback from residents regarding the future of a walking/bike path in the township. She collected the petitions in July and presented the data to the township board. She reported a total of 358 interested in expanding the Goodrich walking paths in the township as well as support for Atlas Township joining Goodrich in recreation.
Also in October, the Genesee County Parks and Recreation Commission extended an invitation to local governments to opt-in to the Genesee County Park, Recreation, Open Space, and Greenway Five-year Plan.
‘We needed a place where young adults and families can ride or walk,? she said. ‘We need to utilize the rural aspects of our communities. So far we’ve had three meetings and discussed maps and possible locations for the paths. We really need input from the residents and we need a plan in place when the grants become available.?
