Athlete wins awards at Victory Games

Aaron Whatley, summer intern for Independence Township Parks and Recreation, coached athlete Rafael Ortiz to three ribbons at the Michigan Victory Games, May 15-18, Michigan State University.
Ortiz competed in three events, earning first place in the slalom course and two second-place ribbons in 100m and 200m races.
“It was excellent ? I enjoyed being a coach, cheering on my athlete,” Whatley said. “It turned out well.”
Parks and Recreation organized the Independence Township Outlaws competitive sports team this year for the Victory Games, for athletes ages 7 and up with primary physical disabilities.
Goals for next year include getting sponsorships so they can train more often, and expand the program, Whatley said.
“We want to offer the same recreational opportunities the able-bodied have to those with disabilities,” he said.
Ortiz has competed in track, field and recreational events for the past 12 years. Last year, he was nominated for the Michigan Victory Games Board as athlete representative. He was reelected for the 2008-2009 season.
The annual Michigan Victory Games are open to any individual with primary physical disabilities. Events include swimming, slalom, boccia, bowling, cycling/ hand cycling, table tennis, power lifting, and track and field.
Independence Township Parks and Recreation will be signing up more athletes in September for the 2009 competition.
