Ortonville-On a hot June day in 1919, a California businessman named Roy Allen mixed up a frothy brew of root beer and sold it for just 5 cents. Allen, along with partner Frank Wright, combined their initials – ‘A? for Allen and ‘W? for Wright and formally named the concoction A&W Root Beer.
The tradition continues in the village with the local Perris family, owners of A&W Root Beer Restaurant near the intersections of M-15 and South Street.
To commemorate the 90 years of A &W locally’from 4-8 p.m., June 20 will be a special car cruise night that also features the band Revolution performing at the local summertime mainstay. No sign-up is necessary for the cruise.
A&W Manager Nicole Consiglio said the restaurant was selected for the celebration since it’s one of the oldest in the area.
‘Not a lot has changed in three decades,? said Consiglio. ‘We open each spring and close in the fall’while many businesses have changed their menus, patrons can find the same great food right here at A&W.?
Area patrons who participate in the cruise will have additional parking areas adjacent to the restaurant where the ‘car hops? will bring food right to their vehicle. Lawn chairs and blankets are welcome during the show.
‘We remain popular by keeping food costs down while continuing to serve a quality product,? said Consiglio.
‘The community is welcome to cruise on in and come celebrate with us.?
