Brandon Twp.-It was something Jeannie McCreery was hoping to have earlier.
Nonetheless, the Brandon Township Clerk said she was glad to be a part of the township’s Veteran Appreciation Lunch Oct. 10 at the Brandon Township Senior Center.
‘I wanted to do this when I first came into office four years ago,? she said. ‘It was a matter of finding the time.?
About 90 residents, including veterans and their families, as well as parents of those currently serving in Iraq, were on hand at the luncheon, according to Ortonville resident Lee Stewart, a former lieutenant colonel in the United States Army Special Forces who served from 1967-95.
McCreery and senior auxiliary chairperson Edna Burton awarded 35 certificates of appreciation to veterans from World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Gulf War. In addition, McCreery said she has about 13 more certificates which need to be mailed.
After lunch, Don Kengerski, commander of Sherman Wudarcki Sutton Post 582, led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance. Brandon Township Supervisor Ron Lapp and Ortonville Village Council President Sue Bess also spoke at the ceremony.
In addition, Stewart talked about the military exhibits at the Old Mill in Ortonville, and Pete Sardo, another veteran, talked about the new national cemetery which is being built in Holly.
Overall, Stewart said he was happy with how the ceremony went. ‘They did a pretty nice job with it ? I think it was pretty well attended.?
