Marching band music and the Oakland County Board of Commissioners may seem like an unlikely mix, but the two were brought together on Jan. 19.
The Lake Orion High School Marching Band, on its way to Washington D.C. in late May, was honored by the Oakland County Board of Commissioners and performed at their meeting on the Oakland County Campus in Pontiac.
‘I thought that was a really nice tribute to the kids,? band director Mike Steele said of the invite.
‘As their director, I see how much they put into it,? he said. ‘Sometimes the kids don’t get the praise they deserve.?
Though the entire band will be headed to D.C., it was a smaller contingent that played for the commissioners.
‘It was exciting,? said junior drum major Amy Abramczyk. ‘It’s really an honor and we got to miss school.?
Abramczyk and fellow junior drum major Lisa Miller agreed that the Washington D.C. trip is a ‘really big honor.?
The LOHS Marching Band has been invited to peform in the Memorial Day Parade in Washington.
‘They’re all looking forward to it in a big way,? Steele said.
The band has one fundraiser remaining: Discount cards for local businesses. For more information, contact a band member or the band office at LOHS.
