Powered by Ryan Mortimer’s two goals and one assist, the Goodrich hockey team has moved on in the state playoffs.
Mortimer’s goals, both in the second period, helped the Martians defeat Fenton 4-2 in the regional opener March 2 at the Flint IMA Arena.
Goodrich advanced to take on neighboring Brandon in the regional semifinals Thursday, March 4.
Steve Locke opened up the scoring with 9:59 left in the first, as he connected on assists from Phil Holloway and Sean Brigham to put Goodrich up 1-0.
After Fenton’s James Winowiecki scored at 8:08 of the first to tie the game at one, it was all Goodrich.
Mortimer found Lance Keene for a goal with 11:33 left in the second period to put the Martians up 2-1. Mortimer then scored with 3:55 left in the second, and then added another goal 16 seconds later to give the Martians command of the game.
In their regular season finale Feb. 28, the Martians defeated Lapeer East 5-2.
Matt Hill scored two goals for the Martians in the win, while Keene scored one goal and assisted on three others.
Max Hawkins got the Martians started on the right foot, scoring with 12:07 left in the first on assists from Keene and Scott Hollingsworth. Hill then scored with 3:40 left in the period, with Keene drawing another assist.
The Martians took a commanding 3-0 lead in the second, as Hill scored his second goal of the game, on assists from Holloway and Mortimer.
Although Lapeer East attempted a comeback in the third period, scoring two goals, the Martians balanced that out with two goals of their own in the third, as Mortimer and Keene did the honors.
