After two recent blowouts, the Goodrich hockey team had a little bit tougher outing Dec. 20 against Lake Orion.
Ryan Mortimer’s goal on an assist from Lance Keene with 1:24 left in the third period enabled the Martians to tie the Dragons at 5, moving the Martians? record to 7-2-1.
Keene scored first for the Martians at 10:14 of the period on assists from Mortimer and Nick Meyers, but Remi Diesbourg came back for Lake Orion to tie the game at one.
Goodrich asserted command of the game with two more goals in the first period, as Matt Hill scored unassisted with 8:26 left and Dan Daugherty connected with 41 seconds left.
However, Lake Orion’s Carl Krauss scored just before the first period expired, cutting the Martians? lead to 3-2.
The Dragons scored twice in the second period, on goals from Ben Longuski and Eric Klooster, to take a 4-3 lead heading into the final stanza.
Hill scored his second goal of the game with 12:51 left on an assist from Brian Van Kuren to knot the game at 4. However, Krauss scored his second goal of the game with 11:55 left in the period to put the Dragons ahead 5-4, setting up Mortimer’s last-minute heroics.
The Martians routed host LakeVille Dec. 19 at the Ice Mountain Sports Complex, winning 11-0 in a game shortened to two periods.
Max Hawkins, Hill and Van Kuren scored two goals apiece, while Keene, Mortimer, Derec Powers, Reece Geml and Phil Holloway scored one apiece.
Against host Mt. Morris at the Flint IMA Dec. 17, the Martians won 12-0 in a game shortened to two periods.
The Martians scored five goals in the first period and seven in the second on their way to the win. Keene notched a hat trick for the Martians, while seven other players scored at least one goal.
Goodrich returns to action Friday, Jan. 2 when they host Lapeer West at 6 p.m.
