Fresh off a run with the Goodrich football team in the state playoffs, Matt Hill is already busy showing his hockey skills.
Hill, a senior, tallied a hat trick for the Martians as they started off their 2003-04 season with a 6-1 win against visiting Fenton Saturday, Nov. 22.
The Martians opened the game’s scoring with 4:19 left in the first period, as sophomore defenseman Steve Tangney scored on an assist from senior goalie Steve Jedlowski to put Goodrich up 1-0.
Two goals in the early stages of the second period helped give the Martians a commanding 3-0 lead. Senior forward Ryan Mortimer scored on an assist from senior Lance Keene at 12:35, and Hill scored the first of his three goals on assists from senior defenseman Phil Holloway and junior forward Brian Van Kuren at 7:29.
Nine seconds after Hill’s goal, Fenton scored its lone goal of the contest, as Chris Anderson connected on an assist from Jason Whalen to trim the Martians? lead to 3-1.
However, Goodrich answered with two more goals in the second period. Senior forward Nick Meyers scored on assists from Keene and senior forward Danny Daugherty at 3:40 of the second, and Hill followed with his second goal of the game from Van Kuren and sophomore forward Reece Geml at 2:22 of thew second, giving the Martians a decisive 5-1 lead at the end of the period.
Hill attained the hat trick unassisted at 8:46 of the third period to wrap up the game’s scoring.
Jedlowski was stellar in net for the Martians, stopping 28-of-29 shots. As a team, the Martians committed only one penalty (senior defenseman Scott Hollingsworth for cross-checking with 13 seconds left in the second), compared to three for Fenton.
