The Brandon girls cross country team made a run for the Flint Metro League championship Oct. 15 at Brandon.
In the end, the Blackhawks finished just behind Linden, which won the league championship by finishing with 49 points to Brandon’s 57. Fenton placed third (63). All three teams finished the dual meet season with 5-1 records.
Kayla Doan was Brandon’s leading runner at the meet, finishing third overall with a time of 21:06.7, trailing only Linden’s Rachel Gutierrez (who won her fourth straight league title) and Lapeer East’s Hannah Stone.
Right behind Doan was Kelsey Carmean, who finished fourth overall (21:07.1). Both Doan and Carmean earned all-league first team honors. Jackie Back (10th, 22:32.8) made the all-league second team.
Other Brandon competitors were Sarah Eldon (18th, 23:11.2), Amanda Allison (24th, 23:56.2), Danielle Westphall (33rd, 25:03.1) and Casey Nesterowich (34th, 25:03.1).
On Saturday, Oct. 11, the Blackhawks finished second at the Reese Invitational with 98 points, trailing only perennial powerhouse Brighton. Doan finished fourth and Carmean fifth, both earning individual medal honors. In addition, Brandon coach Rod Yeacker named Doan the Blackhawks? runner of the meet.
Also running for Brandon were Back, Eldon and Allison.
