Parks and Rec looks to public for feedback on department

The Independence Township Parks and Recreation Department is looking for resident feedback on the services they provide and the future of the department.
Parks and Recreation plans to update its master plan. This occurs every five years and consists of a planning process where the department takes an in-depth look at its programs, facilities and services, then develops a plan of action.
“We just really take a good look at everything we do,” Parks and Recreation Director Mike Turk said.
Turk has invited the entire community to take part in the process by hosting a participatory workshop. The event is set for Thursday, Oct. 30 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the LGI Room at Clarkston High School. Independence Township planning consultant Dick Carlisle will conduct the workshop.
“It is important for people to be there to tell us what services they like and what new sports they would like to see,” Turk said. “Their input can help shape the master plan for the department for the next five years.”
While many people think of Parks and Recreation as just providing programs like softball, Independence has added many sports in the recent past including kickball among others. In addition to sports, the department runs many special programs.
“With the special events there are only so many ways you can add things and make them different,” Turk said. “We would like to hear some other ideas to help us out.”
The topics Turk hopes to receive feedback on include:
• Park and facility development
• Recreation programs
• Partnership with others; public or private entities
• Financial needs (funding)
• Land acquisition
• Community involvement
“We just like general feedback so we know we are headed in the right direction,” Turk said.
The department is expecting between 30-50 people to attend the workshop but would love for more to attend.
After the data is collected, it will be presented to the Independence Township Board and the Planning Commission in late November.
“So people who come really have a lot of influence in what we do,” Turk said.
While Turk said he welcomes anybody from the community, his only request would be to call him at (248) 625-5111, extension 214, if you will be attending. Anyone with questions or needing additional information can call him at that number.
Complimentary refreshments will be provided.
