Led by Phil Holloway’s clutch performance, the Goodrich boys golf team is on their way to the Division III state finals.
The Martians captured first place at the Division III regional meet Oct. 10 at Holly Meadows Golf Course in Capac. Goodrich finished with a team score of 320, beating out second-place LakeVille (330) and third-place Caro (337). The top three teams at regionals advance to states.
The state meet was held Oct. 17 at Forest Hills Golf Club in East Lansing; final results were not available as of press time.
Holloway sank a 40-foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole to earn medalist honors, finishing three over par with a 75. Charlie Richards tied for fifth (78), while Jared Swanson tied for seventh (79).
Rounding out the Martians? scoring were Nick McElrath (88) and Ben Richards (91).
Goodrich coach Doug Wilson said he is optimistic the Martians, who are competing in their eighth straight Division III state final, will do well.
‘We’re playing some of our best golf at the right time of the year,? he said. ‘We’ll have to be at the top of our game to compete against the other schools. Many of our players have played in the state finals, so we have the experience factor on our side.?
