The Lake Orion Village Council made a decision on Monday that was a positive for the LGBT community, but perhaps not a home run.
The Council announced a Human Right Resolution barring discrimination. The exact wording of the resolution will not be released until the Aug. 8 meeting. Lisa Goyette, who pushed for an ordinance, had to settle for the resolution.
“I would have hoped for a human rights ordinance because that has teeth to it,” Goyette said. “These resolutions are not legally binding. There are over two million people in Michigan that have an ordinance in place.”
Goyette is taking a cautious approach on the resolution.
“I’ll have to see what they put together, see what the wording looks like,” she said. “We’ll wait to see what the resolution is and go from there. At least they’re willing to entertain it. That’s a good thing.”
Goyette also pushed for an ordinance recently from the Orion Township Council, which responded with a Human Rights resolution.
Goyette was pleased with the wording in that resolution, which is:
“Whereas, it is the intent of Orion Township that no person be denied equal protection of the laws; nor shall any person be denied the enjoyment of his or her civil or political rights or to be discriminated against in employment, housing, or public accommodations or harassed because of actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, height, weight, marital status, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression.”
