The Goodrich girls basketball team controlled the tempo early and held off the visiting Brandon Blackhawks for a 55-45 win Sept. 4.
The Martians (1-1) asserted themselves early by outscoring the Blackhawks 15-7 in the first quarter, and took a 30-17 lead at the half. The Blackhawks trimmed the Martians’ lead to single digits by the end of the third quarter, 39-32.
However, the Martians’ all-around play eventually put away the Blackhawks. Maribeth Barns led Goodrich with 13 points, six rebounds and six assists, while Jacci Brothers had 12 points and five steals and Andrea Howell contributed eight points and six rebounds.
Freshman Meg Donnay led Brandon with 13 points, while senior guard Lauhnna Waybrant added 12 points and freshman center Savannah Stedman 11 points.
The Blackhawks followed up the contest against Goodrich with a 45-38 loss Sept. 9 against visiting Rochester Adams. Waybrant and Jessica Liebner led the Blackhawks (0-5) with eight points apiece.
Brandon returns to action Tuesday, Sept. 16 at Waterford Kettering, while Goodrich will host Lake Fenton that day.
