In April the village council OK’d a stone park sign for the Goodrich Commons. The 6-foot high solid limestone sign now located just west of the Hegel Road bridge was delivered on Monday after more than three years of work and planning.
‘Our goal was to reflect the historical and natural amenities of the community through a sign,? said Angie Adamec, of the Goodrich Village Volunteers. ‘The stone sign will identify the commons area and hopeful jump start future enhancements of the park. The back of the sign tells the story of the park. The sign and bench will be a great asset to the downtown area of the village.?
The sign is just the beginning, said Adamec. ‘More landscaping around the sign will be coming soon,? she said. ‘We’ll also have a walking path down the hill to the park area. The downtown area of Goodrich will now have a focal point thanks to the work of many people.?
Funding for the sign was provided by the John-Andrew Flemming Foundation established by his older brother, Jason R. Flemming. John graduated with honors from Goodrich High School in 1988 and attended Michigan State University. He died in 2013. The foundation was established by his family to inform individuals of the effects and impact of crystal methamphetamine.
‘John did so many wonderful things,? said Debbie Radar, a village resident and John’s mother. ‘He had many great experiences in his short life of just 43 years. He was just too young. John was a good soul, but he got caught up in this terrible drug. He worked hard to conquer this addiction and really wanted to help others who were involved. We are here to carry on his wishes. Simply, we do not want anyone else to become addicted’anyone that needs help, the foundation is there for assistance.?
Construction of the sign was supplied by local companies, including Lapeer mason Robert Noelle, Flint-based Genesee Cut Stone, Woodbeck Construction of Metamora and Guy Adamec, ceramic artist who will provide custom color tile inlay. The sign area will also include a stone bench and lighting.
