Township adopts construction board of appeals

Atlas Twp.-By a 5-0 vote on Monday night the township board of trustees OK’d an ordinance to establish a three person construction board of appeals. Michigan Law mandates that every municipality that enforces the State Construction Code to have a construction board of appeals. The three person board, appointed by the township supervisor and approved by the board of trustees, are required to have a higher level of knowledge of building experience, according to the law.
Township Supervisor Shirley Kautman-Jones said the township learned of the need for the board a few years ago.
‘The Village of Goodrich asked the township to set up a joint board of appeals but the idea was not accepted by the township,? said Kautman-Jones. ‘The township attorney recommended the construction board of appeals be established within the township. The board is needed for appeals to the building code or a requirement dispute but I’m not aware if there has been an appeal or a need for the board here in the township.?
Appointed to the two-year term board are Jim Slade, Scott Wilson and Chris Hellner. Steve Bullen, will be the alternative. The chairperson will receive $100 per meeting and each member will be paid $50.
