Walkers wanting to cross Main Street at Depot Street will no longer have to jaywalk, once Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) road work is complete.
MDOT agreed to install high-intensity crosswalk signals there, as well as replace existing signals at Clarkston Road, said Clarkston City Manager Carol Eberhardt.
M-15 intersections at Waldon Road and Washington Street will be marked with specially painted crossings, and MDOT also agreed to a crosswalk at Robertson Court, Eberhardt said.
Several yellow ‘yield to pedestrian? signs will also be installed downtown.
Eberhardt said MDOT engineers agreed to a feasibility study to consider lighted no-turn-on-red signals at Main Street and Washington. The current signs are unlighted.
Several parking spots have been added or replaced in downtown, including four in front of an antique shop, and another in front of Rudy’s Market.
MDOT denied a request for bike lanes to be added downtown, saying the area is not a good candidate because of safety issues from installing painted bike lanes. Bike lanes have been discussed, and requested by city officials and residents, Eberhardt said.
