Lady Cagers remain in the lead for the OAA Red title after defeating two league foes last week.
The Clarkston Girls Varsity Basketball team opened the week with a close match-up against Stoney Creek to pull ahead for a 46-41 victory, Feb. 4
The girls were down 11 points as they headed into the second half and came back to turn the game around.
“We created a lot of energy from our press and got the ball where we wanted to offensively against their depth,” said Tim Wasilk, head coach. “I think that is what helped them to take the lead.”
Junior Erika Davenport led the girls with 31 points with 11 rebounds and four steals as senior Kacy Robinson helped with 11 points and one 3-pointer.
They followed it with a win over West Bloomfield on Friday, 40-23. They opened the first quarter by outscoring the home team 10-4 and kept the Lady Lakers to only one point in the second quarter as they scored 16 points.
Davenport led with 15 points and had ten rebounds and six assists. Robinson added 11 points with seven rebound and four steals. Junior Jessica Altene added seven points to the board.
The wins put the Lady Wolves 13-2 overall and 8-1 in the league and in first place.
Wasilk added they are one game ahead of Southfield-Lathrup, who they play on Wednesday, and Farmington Hills Harrison, where they head to next Tuesday.
“There are five games left in the league and they are all going to be tightly contested battles,” said Wasilk. “We are excited to go after it.”
The girls head to Southfield-Lathrup on Wednesday and host North Farmington on Thursday.
“We have already played back-to-back games in the last few weeks,” Wasilk said, adding it is a strength. “Our girls already have a feel for it which helps.”
The Lady Wolves will also host Hoops for Troops on Thursday in honor of Jenna Beno, a 2006 Clarkston graduate and an army veteran who died of injuries sustained while serving in Iraq in October 2012.
“Jenna had a great personality,” Wasilk recalled about Beno who was the team manager in 2006. “She was fun to be around and had a passion for Clarkston Athletics. She did an excellent job and had a great work ethic.”
Megan Goldberg, assistant coach for the JV Lady Wolves team has been putting the event together and proceeds for the night are donated to Luke’s Wings, a non-profit organization uniting wounded warriors, veterans and heroes with their loved ones.
“It is definitely going to be a neat event,” Wasilk added. “It is a good event to bring people together, honor Jenna in that regard and raise money for a good cause at the same time.”
The Lady Wolves invite the community to come at 5:30 p.m. as JV begins the night with their game against North Farmington.
