As Christmas Eve approached, deputies were still looking for two package delivery thieves in Independence Township.
Two men, one a heavy set fellow, 20-30 years old wearing an orange ‘Cedar Point? sweatshirt with black sweat pants, and a black knit cap, and the other, a heavy white man with darker hair, wearing a Carhartt type jacket, driving an early 2000s black Pontiac Grand Prix, are suspected in at least two thefts in the 4500 block of Ava, Dec. 17.
One of the incidents was recorded. Home owners installed the system to keep an eye on the neighborhood after previous suspicious behavior ? people would go up to their house, bang on the door, and run away.
‘That happened a couple times, and we knew it was time to get a video camera. We never intended to get something like this,” the home owner said. ‘We’re hoping it helps catch this guy and stop him from stealing people’s Christmas presents. I really hope someone recognizes him.”
They were expecting delivery of the packages, which were supplies for work and nothing of value to a thief. When they weren’t there, they checked the video.
‘I really thought we’d see one of our kids picking it up off the porch,? the homeowner said.
Detectives are running down leads provided from the public and through Crime Stoppers, said Det. Bill Baldwin, of the Independence Township substation.
Anyone with information on the identity of the suspects is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 248-858-4911 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP. There is a $1,000 cash reward.
