It won’t be too long before students in the Brandon school district will have their own path from Brandon High School to South Street.
Brandon Township Supervisor Ron Lapp said the project began June 26, when the first layers of dirt were moved. He said concrete work was done the week of July 7, but also noted there is no set target date for completion of the project.
On Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2003 the Brandon Township Board awarded a bid to begin construction of the student pedestrian path.
The bid, submitted by Warren Contractors & Developers., of Detroit, was in the amount of $183,294.96. Lapp said the total cost of the project would equal about $190,000, none of which would come out of taxpayers? wallets.
Lapp said the cost would be split between a state grant (about $87,000) and township funds. An additional $100,000 has been long set aside in the general township fund specifically for the project, according to Lapp.
According to Township Treasurer Linda Owen, the path is intended for student pedestrian traffic, which will eventually connect the high school, Belle Ann, H.T. Burt and Harvey Swanson, east of M-15.
Lapp said he is pleased the project is finally coming to fruition.
‘Our kids will have a safe path to walk between the high school and Varsity Drive and A&W,? he said. ‘They’re using that as a walkway now.?
He also said in the future, he would like to see a bike path connecting Brandon Township to Goodrich and Clarkston.
