Relay for Life to take part in study

The Relay for Life Oxford-Lake Orion has been selected as one of three Relay for Life enrollment sites in Southeast Michigan for the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Prevention Study 3 (CPS-3).
To gain more insight on the study, Oxford-Lake Orion Relay for Life members met Feb. 21 at the Palace Inn in Lake Orion for a promotional and informational meeting.
According to a press release, the objective of this Cancer Prevention Study is to enroll at least 300,000 men and women between the ages of 30 and 65 who have never been diagnosed with cancer and follow them for 20-30 years using a simple questionnaire process. Researchers will then look at the relationship between the information collected and the health outcomes to learn ways to prevent cancer.
‘This is a one-time opportunity, hands-on way for us to be personally involved in research and to play a significant role in cancer prevention,? said the chair of the Oxford-Lake Orion Relay, and cancer survivor, Valerie Livingston.
For more information contact Oxford-Orion’s CPS-3 chairwoman, Heather Mellen at cps3oxfordlakeorion@yahoo.com or to learn more about the study itself visit www.cancer.org/cps3.
This year’s Relay will be Saturday, June 1 at Friendship Park in Lake Orion. Enrollment for the study will be 1 p.m. – 5 p.m., but individuals are encouraged to arrive at 1 p.m. to guarantee participation in it.
‘Please help make this historic opportunity one to remember,? Livingston said. ‘Spread the word to your family and friends, get a team together, and tell every single person you know about this opportunity to do something for our children, and children’s children.?
