Kapp hopes to increase BHS spirit as cheerleading coach

After a year under Brandon varsity cheerleading coach Gwen Trahan’s tutelage, Jamie Kapp is assuming the reins of the program.
Kapp, who is in her first year as a history and art teacher at Brandon High School, was appointed in May by the BHS Athletic Department to head up the squad. She spent this past year as the BHS junior varsity cheerleading coach.
She said Trahan impressed upon her the importance of maintaining a balance between hard work and having fun. ‘She taught me you can do both and be successful,? Kapp said.
Kapp started with cheerleading at the middle school level and stayed with it through her years at Alma College, where she was the captain for two seasons. She said the team operated without a full-time coach, which meant more responsibility fell on the captain’s shoulders.
‘If you were the captain, you were pretty much the coach,? she said.
She said her main goal as the coach is to make opposing teams and fans take notice of Brandon’s school spirit.
‘We’d like to get the crowd more involved and have more participation,? Kapp said.
