Farmers Market opens today, downtown

If you’re looking for fresh flowers, fresh organic produce, or even some fresh made sweet treats, than get down to the Lake Orion Farmers Market which opens today from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. next to the Children’s Park in downtown Lake Orion.
‘We have a fair number of new vendors this year,? said Farmers Market Manager Janet Hartman.
New vendors include a local family farm with organic eggs, chicken, beef and pork. There is also a new line of beauty products, such as handmade soaps, lotions, as well as a fresh cut flowers vendor, kettle corn vendor and a pickle vendor.
‘A Lake Orion couple makes homemade pickles, sauerkraut and Kimchi (Korean pickled cabbage),? Hartman said. ‘Being a polish girl, I’m excited about the pickles and sauerkraut.?
Those with a sweet-tooth won’t have to go far either, added Hartman, because a sweets vendor from Oakland County Market will have custom made cakes, cookies, pies and caramels. There will also be a returning homemade honey vendor, a new kettle corn vendor and maple syrup vendor.
‘It’s old fashioned maple syrup,? Hartman said. ‘No giant manufacturing equipment, just boiled down and metal tubs the way they did it 100 years ago.?
Also returning is homemade pasties and another new addition is a local company selling gourmet mushroom healing kits.
‘There is a small kit for you to put in appropriate light and soil to grow your own particular kinds of mushrooms,? Hartman said. ‘They have gourmet edible ones, down to ones that aren’t maybe quite as palatable but used for health issues.?
She added that master gardeners from Michigan State University will also be at the market and stationed at the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) booth.
