School Board looks at sports fees, again

Pay to Play fees for middle school will remain the same, at least for this year.
After school board members raised concerns about fees to play sports at the middle school at the April 25 meeting, Assistant Superintendent of Business and Finance John Fitzgerald decided to ‘back off? the $30 increase.
‘We took a second look at it with respect to what the districts all around us are doing and kind expanded the scope to when we first looked at it a few weeks back,? he said at the May 9 meeting. ‘At the time it’s probably best to leave it as is especially considering the economics and the family considerations in the district and pretty much the regional area.?
He also provided a list to the board of boys and girls sports that are pay to play or ‘self funded.?
Boys? pay to play includes baseball, basketball, bowling, cross country, football, golf, tennis, soccer, skiing, swimming and diving, track, and wrestling. Self funded sports are ice hockey, lacrosse and power lifting. Girls? pay to play includes: basketball, bowling, cheerleading, cross country, golf, skiing, softball, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, track and volleyball. Current self funded sports include: lacrosse, power lifting, and dance.
However, dance will join pay to play in the upcoming school year.
Secretary Deborah Porter said she did notice the pay to play at the middle school level was brought back down to the current $200 level.
‘Thank you for taking that back into consideration,? Porter said. ‘I think it’s really helpful and I think it’s important to do that.?
