Don’t call the inaugural win for the Oxford girls lacrosse team beginners luck.
The girls won their first game of the new varsity sport recently, but many of them are not rookies and all of them are excellent athletes.
According to Coach Andrew Bausack, many of the girls played lacrosse as a club sport for a couple of years, which helped them learn the game before it became a varsity sport this season.
So, the 19-4 victory over Walled Lake United was no fluke.
‘They have worked really hard and there is a lot of athleticism on this team. I was very impressed with how well we played in the first game,? Bausack said.
The team will be tested in its next game when it travels to Carman-Ainsworth April 11.
Bausack said the Wildcats are led by its two captain seniors. Brooklyn Allen is an attacker and Lindsey Workman is a midfielder.
The team also has three junior captains, Emma Kimmel, Jordan Pieczynski and Abby Wrobel. Kimmel and Piecznski are midfielders and Wrobel is a defender.
Another leader on the team is junior Caitlyn Wroblewski, who is in goal for the Wildcats.
In the first game, Madi Eschberger was the leading scorer with five goals. Kimmel netted four, Pieczynski had three and Wrobel scored two.
There also is a junior varsity girls lacrosse team, so the varsity is heavy with upper classmen, with the exception of two freshmen and a sophomore.
Since Bausack and the girls are new together, the team all faced some unknowns.
‘I am excited about what we can do this year and I know the team is too,? he said.
‘Some of them have not played before but they have played other sports such as hockey, basketball and volleyball and they are very athletic. This helps them make the transition more easily.
‘We are excited about the team, they have great attitudes and athleticism.?
