Varsity cheer co-coach Shari Russell was ‘very happy? with the team’s performance during regionals on Saturday at Hartland High School.
The Wildcats finished with a 730.6616 points. ‘We probably had the best three round combination we had all year,? Russell said. ‘We placed ahead of all three of our district teams we competed against, and ahead of North Farmington, who we competed against in the OAA (Oakland Activities Association).?
Oxford totaled 218.6 points after round one and 217.6616 points in round two. They turned it on in round three, finishing with 294.4 points. ‘Our goal was to have our best performance, so we were very happy,? she said.
She said she saw a lot of great things and a lot of progress happen this season. The Wildcats increased their average score by more than 20 points this season and also placed higher in districts and regionals. They also earned a second OAA white division title.
‘We couldn’t be happier,? she said. ‘I’m really proud of our seniors.?
She called it a ‘bittersweet moment? to see her seniors grow. She said the current seniors were there as freshmen when she first began coaching at Oxford.
‘Some of them I’ve had all four years on varsity, so we are sad to see them go,? she said. ‘They have been such a huge part of the team and growth of the team, so we are really sad to see them go and we will miss them.?
‘At the same time, we are so excited for the younger girls on the team, our JV program and our middle school program because we feel like we have a lot of talent in the younger levels of our program,? Russell said. ‘We are just really excited for our future at the same time.?
