The stage is set, the lights cued and Clarkston Village Players ready to bring to life the real emotions of abandonment and the need to be accepted in their latest play ‘Drinking Alone.?
Ivan, played by Rick Shaw decides to contact his son and daughter after years of estrangement.
His son Joe, played by Sean Harbert who hasn’t done much with his life tries to impress his father by hiring a bubbly fast-talking ‘escort? named Renee, played by Angela Roberts, to pretend to be his fianc?.
Meanwhile his sister Carrie, played by Johana Bell, a famous news anchor drowns her hurt and anger towards her father for ‘walking out on the family? years ago to marry Phyllis, played by Joy OetJens one beer after another.
Director Karen Dobson said she likes the ‘human element? of the play.
‘Playwright Norm Foster is able to create characters people care about,? Dobson said. ‘He gives them all depth, so all the actors have something to work with, as well as with providing us with real life situations.?
Dobson said she wanted to direct the play because she could ‘visualize it.?
‘That’s all I really need to do to take on a director position,? she said. ‘If I can visualize it I can do it.?
Dobson also noted she has a cast that is talented and works hard.
‘We got new faces, which is always nice to see. Angela, who has been driving up from Detroit is a lot of fun,? she said. ‘We also got some returning people, so I’m fortunate to have a good cast.?
‘Drinking Alone? will run Jan. 20, 21, 27, 28, 29; Feb. 3, 4 at the Depot Theater, 4861 White Lake Road. Shows start at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. on Sunday.
