Fourth-graders from Oxford Elementary will be combining the sound of music with their artistic talents during a free concert at Oxford High School on Tuesday, April 19.
Put forth by the combined efforts of OES Music Teacher Peggy Mueller and OES Art Teacher Linda Dzurka, the students will sing about major artists throughout history.
‘I have been teaching them songs about different artists and have some discussion, and then Linda in art class has picked up that discussion,? Mueller said. ‘They have done several pieces of art that are representative of what the different artists did.?
In addition to singing about music, students created art projects inspired by famous artists such as Leonardo DaVinci, Pablo Picasso, Claude Monet and George O’Keeffe.
Mueller said one of the coolest art projects the kids did was dripping art, made famous by American artist Paul Jackson Pollack.
According to Dzurka, the students were given some artist aprons and they each painted their own aprons in the style of Pollack. ‘They will be wearing their aprons during the concert,? she said.
Some art pieces will be showcased on the screen while students are performing.
Following the concert, the students? artwork will be on display in the auditorium for their parents and public to see.
In addition, Victoria’s Delights will be offering a buffet. The buffet is $3 for a small plate and $5 for a large plate.
‘Each and every student will have a piece of art in the lobby, so parents can get something to nibble and then they can go and view all of the art,? Mueller.
Mueller and Dzurka agreed the timing of the concert could not be better since collaboration between teachers is a main focus of the International Baccalaureate.
‘I think the whole appealing thing about the concert is that I could collaborate with Peggy, and the kids get really excited about it when they go from one subject to another and they can make those connections,? Dzurka said. ‘It is very much IB-related to get working together on things.?
Both teachers said they can see the excitement building in the students.
