Local spikers win state championship

Oxford’s wrestling squad wasn’t the only local team to win a state title during the month of March.
The Oxford Parks and Recreation Adult Co-Recreational team ‘Flavor of the Week? won the Michigan Parks and Recreation Association’s Class C Coed Volleyball State championship on Saturday, March 12 at Western High School in Parma, MI.
Flavor of the Week defeated Mental Block out of Barry County. They lost the first game of the finals, before coming back to win the second and third game by two points.
Manager Gregg Valley said the best part about winning the tournament was defeating a team that looked good on paper.
‘It’s just exciting to even get to the finals and then face a team that you think, on paper, might be better than we are, but to go ahead and win it anyways . . . it’s cool,? he said.
His team finished 7-1 in pool play and was seeded second heading into the knockout stages of the finals.
According Valley, Flavor of the Week won Oxford Parks and Recreation’s Fall Volleyball League.
They asked if they could go back to the state tournament this year since they finished as semifinalists last season.
Besides Valley, Flavor of the Week team members included Laura Bright, Ed Carr, Tonya Yoder, Ted Roberts and Rocky and Sue Deciechi.
This is only the second year this group has played together.
According to Valley, the team itself has been around for eight years, but has had different individuals come and go throughout the years.
Valley thinks Flavor of the Week’s success at the state level might spur other teams who win the Co-Ed Volleyball league to look at competing for a state title.
‘I would not be surprised if they got excited and wanted to go next year if they win it,? Valley said. ‘There are some good teams in it (Oxford Park and Recreation); it’s competitive play over there and it is really anybody’s season to win every year.?
