Zack Sweet is ready to take his game to the next level.
The Goodrich Martian junior has already been named captain of the varsity football team for the 2011 season and is prepared for college recruiters to be watching when he takes to the field next season.
Sweet, who stands 6-foot 3 -inches tall and weighs 230-pounds has been noticed by the U.S. Army National Combine, an organization that specifically targets just 500 high school underclassmen that demonstrate exceptional althletic skills.
‘In high school football we play teams that you can just run over,? said Sweet. ‘At the college level it’s all out, all the time. Nothing is easy. I’m nervous, yet ready to go. There are a handful of division one schools that I’d like to have a shot at’in Texas I’ll have a good shot at that.?
Every January, a new group of the nation’s top high school football players travel to San Antonio, Texas to highlight and hone their football abilities in front of Division One college recruits. The Army National Combine is modeled after the NFL combine, with all tests and competitive drills taking place in the Alamodome.
‘I’m sure they noticed his amount of time on the field, as well as his size and his speed. All that combined has been drawing attention to him from recruits,? said Jennifer Sweet, Zack’s mother and the Goodrich track and field coach.
Zack is registered and all set to compete and show his skills on the Alamodome field, Jan. 6-9. Since this year’s football season has now ended for the Goodrich Martians with the loss against Williamston Nov. 3, Sweet has started his off-season training with Coach Edwards, the Goodrich varisty football head coach.
The Sweet family is one of many talents, with Zack Sweet dominating on the football field and his older brother Nick, a senior at Goodrich, excelling in track and field, even breaking his mother’s previous 100 dash record. Nick has met with and talked to numerous schools about scholarships for his accomplishments in track and field, including Grand Valley, Western Michigan, and Siena Heights.
‘Nick is my track boy and Zack is my football boy,? said Jennifer. ‘Nick has been getting lots of offers from schools for his accomplishments in track and now Zack is being recognized for football. I’m so proud of them both.?
