The Varsity Boys Soccer team got back in the win column this week after they stopped the Pontiac Phoenix from rising with a crushing 6-1 victory on Thursday, Sept. 23.
Oxford got on the board early when junior Mike Kitchner scored two goals in the first six minutes, and junior Marco Bonfiglio got a goal late in the first half to give the Wildcats a commanding 3-0 lead.
Senior Jacob Clark scored to make it 4-0 before Pontiac scored on a penalty kick. Oxford got two goals late in the second half from senior Jesse Kolean to give the Wildcats their final margin of victory.
‘Everyone contributed tonight for the win,? said Head Coach John Thaler. ‘It was a great effort by the entire team and this is the momentum we need to carry us into a difficult week.?
Earlier in the week, Oxford played Birmingham Seaholm to a 2-2 tie on Tuesday, Sept. 21.
Seaholm scored with two minutes left in the first half to take a 1-0 lead into halftime, but Kitchner placed a free-kick into the box, which was headed by senior captain Conner Risinger and poked in by senior Christian Lopez.
Seaholm went ahead 2-1 with 10 minutes left in the game, but senior Matt Frisch tied the game with less than five minutes to go.
‘I’ve said it all season long that Oxford never gives up and fights to the end. It really showed tonight when we were down a goal twice in the game,? Thaler said.
‘The team played with heart and determination and they, at a minimum, earned at least a tie as a result,? he added.
The Wildcats improved to 7-4-1 overall and 2-4-1 in the OAA White division. They play at North Farmington on Sept. 27 before traveling on back-to-back to Bloomfield Andover on Sept. 29 and Clarkston on Sept. 30.
