Hair Inn raising money for Catie

The Hair Inn and Spa in Lake Orion is planning a fundraiser on April 6 to help raise money to cover expenses for the family of two-year-old Catherine “Catie” Maurer, who is battling Non-Hodgkin’s Leukemia and Lymphoma.
Helen Barnes, receptionist at the Hair Inn, is the step-mother of Julie Maurer, Catie’s mother. Julie and her husband, Ed, Catie’s father, live in Lake Orion and have two other children. Catie has been undergoing chemotherapy at William Beaumont Hospital for one year, and has a year left of the treatment.
Barnes said the fundraiser was the idea of Hair Inn owners Debbie Shiver and Sandy Poppelreiter. Barnes said Laura Sulisz of Hair Inn also had a lot to do in planning the day.
On April 6, 1-4 p.m.Hair Inn will donate 50 percent of all proceeds from hair cuts, manicures, waxing and other services to pay for expenses for the Maurer Family. Barnes said the money will be used for such things as covering prescription drug costs.
“The prescription cover is so much,” she said. “(Catie) has to take three every day, and other prescriptions. She was in the hospital a month ago with Shingles.”
Catie was diagnosed on Feb. 20, 2002 after she had a small lump removed, according to her mom Julie. Barnes said a bone marrow test was done recently and no cancer was found, although Catie now has no resistance to other ailments, such as bacterial infections.
Barnes said Catie will be at the Hair Inn fundraiser, at least for a little while.
Hair Inn and Spa is located at 3753 Baldwin Road, across from the former Neumaier’s IGA. For more information, call 391-3322.
