Donations keep troops in touch

John Manzella of Oxford, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, knows how important keeping in touch with home is to troops overseas.
To help them stay in contact with loved ones, he collects donations for the Cell Phones for Soldiers program.
He donated a World War II footlocker full of them to Al Hall, sales manager at John Bowman Chevrolet in Independence Township, Sept. 3.
‘This is fantastic ? it’s great to see the community come together to support the troops,? said Hall.
The phones are recycled in exchange for free phone cards for overseas troops.
‘I remember being in the Air Force in England, the line in front of the big red phone booths were a mile long,? Manzella said. ‘Calling home really helps when you’re gone.?
