New Hope Bible Church’s Music Under the Moonlight started last year as a way to enjoy some tunes under the stars by the lake.
This year, it’s also about fighting slavery around the world.
‘It started out with people who wanted to play under the stars by the lake and it’s turned into a community thing,? said organizer Malinda Worth, a therapist involved with World Outreach Center of North Carolina. ‘We want to let people know about this ? it happens everywhere in the world.?
The concert venue, 5-11 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 21, at the church, 8643 Sashabaw Road, showcases local musical talent. It includes free food and fellowship with others, drum circle, and fund raiser and platform to raise awareness of human trafficking.
‘We’ll be in the pavilion by the lake, under the stars, with a roaring bonfire,? said Dan Tennant, planning committee member. ‘It’s a great way to enjoy a summer evening, a great way to enjoy some amazing local talent and musicians, and a great way to support an important cause.?
Proceeds benefit the center’s mission, including Worth’s trip next month to Germany for a global conference against the sex trade.
‘I’ve known Malinda for a long time ? I think what she does is great,? said organizer Beth Schmeisl. ‘Many turn a blind eye towards slavery in the world. She’s going into the heart of it. That takes a lot.?
Dawn Jacobs of Artichoke Interiors will help transform the pavilion behind the church into a music stage, with lights and sound system, along with tiki torches, bonfire, and food tent
‘Last year was at a smaller scale,? Schmeisl said. ‘We had about 100 last year. We’re planning for 200 or more this year.?
Participating musicians and bands include Alisa DiRienzo; Dan and Shaye Tennant; Matt Slavin, Adam Anzures, and Dan Tennant; The Bends, Kevin Briski, Danny Scheibe, and Aaron Kub; Nate Marialke; Breath and Dirt; and Daniel Rossi, unless his band, The Victorious Secrets, is selected for the finals in the freecreditscore.com contest.
‘We tried to get a big variety, folk, blues, rock ? something for everyone to enjoy,? Schmeisl said.
Food and prize contributors include Caribou Coffee, Subway, Rio Wraps, American Pride Tattoo, LaVida Massage, Matrix Hair Products, Snap Fitness, Randolph’s Salon, and Kroger.
‘We have great prizes,? Schmeisl said.
Suggested donation is $5. New Hope Bible Church started in Clarkston in 1946, in its current location since 2001.
