Dear Parents:
In light of recent world events, the Department of Homeland Security has elevated the nation’s alert status to orange. As we face the difficult days, weeks and months to come, I am writing to assure you that the first priority of our staff is to protect the well being of each and every one of our students.
Effective planning is the key component of our district safety plan, including the continuing collaboration between our staff, local law enforcement and fire departments. Trained and committed crisis management teams have been established; in addition, our counselors, social workers and psychologists are prepared to support the needs of others during and following high stress times. The safety plan also provides clear protocols and procedures to follow for a wide variety of circumstances.
The Code Orange Alert status does not necessitate building lockdown procedures. However, we continue to maintain communication with local law enforcement regarding any alert status change. Our buildings have been directed to review all necessary security measures and follow appropriate protocols. We are thankful for the visibility and support provided at each of our schools by the Oxford Village Police Department and the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department.
In the event of a Code Red Alert during school hours, the district will immediately institute building lockdown protocols. Depending upon additional information, further emergency actions will be implemented in collaboration with police and fire agencies. Parents are urged to tune into local radio and television, as well as check the District Emergency Phone Line 248-969-5070 for updates. We also post any emergency closings on the website www.cancellations.com. You can register at this site to request an automatic e-mail message be sent to you whenever the district makes a posting to this site. We ask your cooperation in not calling the school, as this ties up phone lines during an emergency.
As a reminder, parents always have the right to pick up their children from school unless situations exist that may pose a danger for anyone being out-of-doors.
As needed, we will continue to update the district’s website www.oxford.k12.mi.us regarding safety and security issues. The website currently features answers to a number of commonly asked questions about our schools and homeland security.
