The saying goes that drinking milk does a body good.
But Oxford High School senior Nicholas Hadorn found out that milk also does the wallet good as he was selected as a recipient of the 2010 Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year (SAMMY) Award.
Hadorn will receive a $7,500 college scholarship and a trip to Disney World in June, where he will meet Milk Mustache celebrity guests, Denver Nuggets point guard Chauncey Billups and gold medal gymnast Shawn Johnson.
‘I honestly was not expecting to get it, but then I got an email that said I was one of the 25 winners, and I was pretty estatic about it,? Hadorn said.
The SAMMY Awards honors 25 high school seniors who are top performers when it comes to academics, athletics, community service and leadership and who also include milk on their training tables.
Hadorn was selected out of a application pool of more than 400,000.
The winners were selected by a panel of superstar athletes, including tennis player Andy Roddick, NBA basketball player Steve Nash, Billups, U.S. Olympic swimming medalist Dana Torres and U.S. Olympic figure skater Michelle Kwan.
‘I feel like it is an honor to get it because it is a national scholarship that was chosen by professional athletes, and for them to recognize me as one of the nation’s scholar athletes, I thought that was pretty cool,? he said.
Hadorn will graduate this year with a 4.0 while participating in Varsity Football and Wrestling.
He was an offensive guard and defensive tackle while playing football and wrestled in the 215-pound weight division this year.
When he was not dominating the classroom and athletic fields, he served as the president of the National Honor Society, where he helped plan and execute the organization’s blood drives
After graduating from Oxford, Hadorn plans on attending Michigan State University to study chemistry/premed and then proceeding to medical school upon completion.
