The Varsity Boys Baseball team showcased the true meaning of sportsmanship when they traveled to Lansing to play a doubleheader against Swartz Creek on Monday, May 17.
Oxford was victorious in both games, taking game one 6-2 and game two 5-2.
But the game would be remembered for the true act of sportsmanship a couple of Wildcat players showed after the game.
After the last out of game two, a Swartz Creek player injured himself running to first base and was not able to make it back to the Dragons? dugout, despite his best efforts.
The teams had already shaken hands when seniors Neil Maskill and Mitch Stefanski saw the injured player struggling towards the dugout. They went over without being asked, lifted up the player and carried him the rest of the way to the Dragons dugout.
Head Coach Jeff Willis called the act a true example of sportsmanship.
In the week’s earlier action, the Wildcats lost a doubleheader to Birmingham Brother Rice 10-7 and 10-4 and split a doubleheader against Lapeer East, losing game one 6-4 before taking game two 7-1.
They play a doubleheader against Linden at home on Thursday, May 20 starting a 4 p.m. During the break between game one and two, the coaching staff will honor the senior members of the team.
They close the season with a doubleheader at Troy on Saturday, May 22 and at Holly on Monday, May 24.
