A 16-year-old Addison Township boy is a hero after saving his family from a fire that occurred in their home on Thursday, April 29.
‘He is the real hero,? said Addison Township Fire Chief Jerry Morawski.
Addison Township firefighters responded to a house fire at 2750 Drahner Road around 2:53 a.m. While they were en route to the fire, they received word from Oakland County Sheriff’s Deputies that six people needed to be treated for smoke inhalation.
According to Morawski, four children and two adults were taken to Crittenton Hospital in Rochester to be treated for smoke inhalation.
Everyone who suffered smoke inhalation is expected to recover and the teenage boy may be transported to Children’s Hospital in Detroit, according to Morawski.
‘The16-year-old woke up his family and got everyone out of the house after he smelled smoke,? said Morawski.
The firefighters began battling the blaze, which upon the time of their arrival consumed 60 percent of the house Morawski said.
‘We put the flames, smoke and everything out through the back side of the house,? he added.
By the time they got the blaze under control, it was nearly 4:30 in the morning.
‘It took about an hour-and-a-half to get a real good control over it and make sure that it was totally out and then we made sure there were no hot spots,? he said.
When they finally cleared the area, it was almost 9 a.m.
According to Morawski, the fire started on the west side of the house in the basement and that the smoke detectors inside the house were not working.
Morawski stated that the cause of the fire is yet to be determined because the area that the Oakland County Fire Investigators wanted to get into was deemed unsafe.
‘We are probably going to do something for him. Not to many 16-year-olds can probably do that, wake up and make sure everybody got out,? said Morawski.
