Freshman and sophomore members of the Varsity Track team represented the Wildcats very well as they set five meet records at the Spring Break Classic Freshman-Sophomore Invitational at Dakota High School on Friday, April 9.
For the girls, freshman Brooke Kovacic established two records in the long distance runs she participated in. Her time of 5:47.74 in the 1600 meter run not only established a meet record, but she beat her fellow runners by nearly 24 seconds.
In her other race, the 3200 meter run, Kovacic finished nearly two minutes ahead of her only opponent in the race, sophomore Jillian Walker.
Kovacic finished with a time of 12:45, a new meet record.
Walker finished in 14:34.
Freshman Jessica Howell established a meet record in the 100 meter dash, completing it in 12.90 seconds.
Jessica Brasington had two first places on the day. She established the meet record in the discus toss, throwing one 74 feet.
She also claimed first place in the shot put, throwing the shot (the metal ball) 28-feet-two-inches.
The Wildcats also finished first in six other events on the day, the 4 x 800 meter relay, the 4 x 200 meter relay, the 800 meter run, the long and high jump as well as the pole vault.
The only record the boys set was by sophomore Doug Klimbal, who ran the 300 meter hurdles in 44.53 seconds. He beat his competition by nearly a second.
Klimbal also finished first in the high hurdles with a time of 17.15 seconds.
Oxford claimed the top three spots in the 3200 meter run, where Ryan Gillespie finished first with a time of 11:13.6 seconds.
He was followed by Alec Smith in second and Zack Kelley in third.
The Wildcats finished first in the 4 x 400 meter relay, which was run by freshman Chad Wicker, Klimbal, sophomore Jan Eiben and sophomore Anthony Cappuccilli.
Cody Westmoreland won the pole vault event, capping out at the 10 foot mark.
The Wildcats have a busy week as they travel to Linden on Wednesday, April 14 to take on Swartz Creek and Linden before coming home to participate in the Oxford Invite on Saturday, April 17.
