A week and a half into the season, and already the varsity girls soccer team is catching some bad breaks.
Senior captain Sarah Ricketts was lost to a leg injury for the entire season during their first game against Bloomfield Andover, and last week’s games did not produce a victory.
They lost a 1-0 decision to Clarkston on Monday, March 29 and tied Waterford Kettering 2-2 on Thursday, April 1.
The Wildcats were leading Kettering 2-1 when Kettering was able to score the tying goal with less than two minutes left in the game. Oxford goals were scored by sophomore Chelsea Johnson and junior Amanda Roth.
‘We were bummed,? said Head Coach Larry Ferris. ‘We defended very well the whole game, but we had about 15 shots on goal that just didn’t get in.?
Clarkston scored the lone goal 10 minutes into the game and held on to defeat Oxford in their game on Monday.
Despite the rough start, Ferris has been encouraged by how well the girls are playing defense.
‘They are playing well. We’re not getting dominated on, were doing ok and we are defending very well. We just have to get some more offense going,? Ferris added.
Ferris plans on working with the girls on the technical aspect of striking the ball towards the net in the upcoming practices to try and help the girls generate some more offense.
Their record drops to 0-2-1 on the season.
When the girls return from spring break, they travel to Romeo High School on April 13 and Groves High School on April 16 before participating in the Flint Metro League tournament on April 17 at Fenton.
