One-room schoolhouses evoke images of simpler times, when children of many ages gathered together to learn reading, writing and arithmetic.
Learn more about these charming schoolhouses at a special program 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 6 in the Community Room of the Independence Township Library, 6495 Clarkston Road.
The program is sponsored by the Clarkston Community Historical Society. Guest speaker is Suzanne Daniel, a board member of the Michigan One-Room Schoolhouse Association.
The association, the only organization of its kind in the U.S., holds an annual conference in which people from across the state come to learn how to research and restore one-room school buildings. Many also trade their stories and reminiscence about their experiences in one-room schools.
In addition, the association coordinates an ongoing survey and inventory of all existing one-room schools in Michigan, and serves as a clearinghouse for communications and information for those involved in the preservation, interpretation and appreciation of one-room schoolhouses.
Admission is free and refreshments will be served. For more information, call the Clarkston Heritage Museum at 248-922-0270.
