The sun shined on the practice field on Friday afternoon as the girls from the varsity soccer team prepared for their first game.
A strong wind blew in to give the girls another component besides Waterford Mott to get ready for this week.
‘I am excited for the team to start,? said Sarah Wasilk, head coach.
‘They have been working really hard during the off season and I have a positive outlook.?
The drive began after finishing last year’s season to Grand Blanc in the second round of district playoffs, 4-1.
Being only a few points away from the last round provided the girls a taste of what they could achieve for the next season.
‘This year their goal is to win the league and possibly the district,? said Wasilk. ‘We have never won a district championship. It would be a great achievement.?
The team has 21 players on the team this year with a blend of new faces and returners. The strengths of the team lies within the senior leadership on and off of the field.
‘The veterans have worked together for years,? Wasilk added. ‘They are a solid group of girls and have been playing together since they were little. They know how each other plays and what to expect from each other.?
Senior Breanne Timm, a four-year starter, leads defense and the leadership for the back.
‘The defense is really strong,? said Wasilk. ‘I have a lot of confidence in them.?
The girls play their first game on Thursday night against Mott.
‘Mott is a good team and I expect it to be a competitive game,? said Wasilk. ‘It’s not a game we are taking lightly.?
The girls host Mott on Thursday and Oxford on Monday. Both games begins with JV at 5:30 p.m. and varsity follows.
